…most of us have a communications device of one form or another. Whether it be a mobile phone, tablet or lap top, there is sure to be at least one in every van.
To some, escaping to the coast or country in the motorhome is the objective and to escape the pressures of modern life that these devices can bring. For others, there is still a need to be ‘connected’, whether it be to check work e mails, read the online newspapers, use Facebook or keep in touch with the family so somehow need to connect to the internet.
There are a few considerations to take into account…
Whether you buy this HuaWei, or some other mobile wi-fi device, bear in mind you need a DATA ONLY sim card as obviously you can’t text or make a phone call from the device.
Whatever device you buy make sure it is UNLOCKED. This is fairly important as this allows you to buy any sim, from any network. As an example if you were coming to Mid Argyll where I live you would not want to have a Vodafone sim as the signal is pretty poor. Do your homework and check the major providers’ signal in the area you are heading for. The other benefit to buying an unlocked device is that if you are intending travelling abroad, you can buy a sim in that country for a local network that will be much cheaper than using a UK sim abroad.
Because of the advice I gave above about the flexibility of buying an unlocked device, you should NOT buy a sim on a 12 month contract. There is simply no need to tie yourself into to paying month after month to the same network company. If you don’t use your motorhome very much in the winter, why pay for a contract you might not be using. Shop around for the best deal but I would recommend GIFFGAFF. With GiffGaff once you have their Sim installed, you can activate it for 30 days at a time. At the end of the 30 days if you don’t top up, the Sim lapses until you top up again. If you install the GiffGaff App on your mobile you can check your useage and time remaining. GiffGaff uses the O2 network.
